What we do

Six jobs, three bundles, prices in rand

We are two private motorists, not a dealership and not a broker, and nobody pays us a commission. What follows is what people ask us for most often, with indicative rand figures so you can decide before you phone. If what you need is not on the list, say so and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right people.

Six jobs, one at a time

  1. Show-day walkthrough

    R650 per person

We meet you at the hall, walk the route we have planned, and spend the four useful hours with you. You sit in the cars, we ask the awkward questions, and you leave with a written page on each car that mattered. Tickets and parking are yours.

    • A marked-up floor plan with a one-direction route
    • One written comparison page per car, up to eight cars
    • Our own cabin case used to test every boot you care about
  2. Expo shortlist call

    R450

Forty-five minutes on the phone before the show. We go through your actual week, your budget band and your luggage, and we tell you which eight stands to walk and which twenty to ignore. Most people find this is the part that saves the day.

    • Forty-five minutes on the phone, at a time that suits you
    • A shortlist of stands sent to you in writing afterwards
    • Three questions to ask on each stand, written out
  3. Concours viewing notes

    R380

For a classic display rather than an expo. We go through the entry list where one exists, explain what the judging rewards, and tell you where to park, when to arrive and how long the lawn will take. Written and sent the evening before.

    • Notes on the venue, the drive and the parking
    • A plain explanation of the judging sheet
    • What to ask owners, and what not to touch
  4. Long-run comfort assessment

    R1 200

You bring the car you are considering, or the car you already own, and we spend two hours on roads that mean something: coarse tar, a speed hump, a gravel entrance and a climb. You get a written assessment of ride, noise, seat support, visibility and aircon.

    • Two hours on a fixed route through the Boland
    • Written notes on ride, noise, seat support and visibility
    • A plain verdict on four hundred kilometres with a passenger
  5. Sitting in on a pre-purchase inspection

    R1 850

We attend the inspection with you at an independent workshop, translate the findings into plain language, and tell you which items are negotiating points and which are reasons to walk. The workshop charges separately for the inspection itself.

    • Attendance at the inspection, up to two and a half hours
    • A translated summary of every finding, ranked by cost
    • A list of what to renegotiate and what to walk away from
  6. Hire briefing for a Cape trip

    R550

For visitors and for locals hiring something larger. We go through the daily rate and what it leaves out, the excess, the tyre and glass question, gravel restrictions and the photographs to take at handover. Useful before a Garden Route run.

    • A written briefing on excess, cover and gravel clauses
    • A handover checklist, including the photographs to take
    • Route notes for the first and last day of the hire

All prices are indicative and in rand, quoted per job rather than per hour unless stated. They do not include show tickets, parking, fuel, workshop fees or anything a third party charges you directly. We confirm the figure in writing before we start, and if a job turns out to be smaller than expected we charge less.

Bundles

Three bundles that put the jobs together

  1. Show weekend

    R1 450

Someone attending a big expo for the first time in years, who wants the day to count rather than to be endured.

    • The shortlist call before you travel
    • A marked floor plan with a route and two sitting-down points
    • Four hours in the hall with us on the quieter of the two days
    • One written comparison page per car, up to eight cars
    • A follow-up call the week after, while it is still fresh
  2. Garden Route preparation

    R2 900

A couple planning a long trip east, in their own car or a hired one, who would rather find the problems in Cape Town than in Storms River.

    • Two hours of comfort assessment on our Boland route
    • Route notes from the city to Plettenberg Bay with sensible stops
    • A tyre, spare wheel and load check before you leave
    • A hire briefing if the car is not your own
    • A written plan for the return leg, including the late-afternoon sun
  3. Buying decision

    R4 600

Anyone narrowing a shortlist to one car and sensibly nervous about spending several hundred thousand rand on a hunch.

    • A long first conversation about your week, not about cars
    • Four hours at a show or at forecourts of your choosing
    • Two comfort assessments on the roads you actually drive
    • Attendance at one pre-purchase inspection, with a ranked summary
    • A written list of the admin: roadworthy, transfer, licensing and insurance

How we work through a show, step by step

This is the order we use ourselves, and it is the order we use when somebody has booked a walkthrough. It is deliberately boring. The boring part is what stops a hall from making the decision for you.

Show halls and long roads

Phone us before the show, not after it

A forty-five minute call the week before an expo changes the whole day, and it costs less than the parking and the tickets together. Phone the Bree Street number during the hours on the contact page, or send a note through the form and tell us which show you are going to and what the car has to do for you.
